The Moon

So, in waking life, this happened:

I dreamed that I woke up after nightfall. Nobody else was there to turn on the lights, so I tried to, but noticed there was a blackout.

I woke up from that dream when my mother called from the hall, wondering why it was so dark. I was about to call back that there was a blackout, then realized that I'd been dreaming and it was really just that there was nobody else here to turn on the lights.

I dragged myself out of bed, feeling so very weary and heavy, and met her out in the hall. She asked why I hadn't put fresh newspaper out for the dog, and I told her that I didn't see the point when she brought the dog outside with her the whole day. (Which she had done.) But now that he was back, I'd be happy to lay it out for him.

It was such a convincing waking-life detail that I ignored how our ceiling had disappeared and this huge half moon was setting from North to South, casting a silver light over everything.

And then I really woke up, when my mother called from the hall, "Why's it so dark in here?" And I realized it was night time, though I'd only meant to take a catnap, but there'd been nobody else here to turn on the lights when it got dark. I dragged myself out of bed, feeling so very weary and heavy, and met her out in the hall to put newspaper out for the dog that had been out with her all day.
